Senator Rand Paul Test Positive for Coronavirus

Senator Rand Paul (RINO-KY)

Words has just broken that Senator Rand Paul has tested positive for Coronavirus. According to The Hill:

“Senator Rand Paul has tested positive for COVID-19. He is feeling fine and is in quarantine. He is asymptomatic and was tested out of an abundance of caution due to his extensive travel and events,” Sergio Gor, Paul’s spokesman said.

Gor added that Paul “was not aware of any direct contact with any infected person.”

While it is no secret that INDY REPUBLICAN’s previously staunch support for Senator Paul has long since disappeared, and is now replaced with loathing and disgust at his betrayal of conservatives and libertarians. We do not wish the Coronavirus on anyone and we all sincerely hope and pray that Senator Paul recovers. Good Luck Rand, may you regain your health and grow some balls.

Open Letter To Senator Rand Paul

To: The Honorable Senator Rand Paul of the Commonwealth of Kentucky.

From: Disgruntled former supporters of Senator Paul

Subject: Senator Paul’s betrayal of conservatism and libertarianism.

Dear Senator Paul,

We would like to start by saying that we are very glad to see you have recovered from the attack you sustained in 2017. Now that we have dispensed with the pleasantries, we would like to discuss some areas in which your conduct has made it impossible for us to EVER support you again in the future. As you are well aware your brethren in the House of Representatives are conducting an impeachment inquiry into President Trump, and his pressuring of the Ukrainian government into investigating his possible presidential opponent Joe Biden. Leaving aside the issue of whether or not the President should be impeached. Your conduct today at a rally with President Trump has shown you have completely sold out to the forces of big government socialism.

At the rally in question you demanded that the press release the name of the whistleblower in the Ukrainian scandal. Notwithstanding the media may not know who the whistleblower is. The whistleblower’s identity is protected by federal whistleblower laws. Therefore by encouraging others to publicly out the whistleblower you could possibly be encouraging possibly criminal conduct on the part of the media.

You would do well to read what Congressman Justin Amash who backed your 2016 presidential bid had to say about whistleblower’s:

Also take a look at Congressman Joe Walsh’s response to your asinine defense of unlimited government power:

Government transparency, openness and rule of law are the cornerstones of true conservatism. These ideals have been part and parcel of the values we conservatives hold dear, since before Barry Goldwater and Ronald Reagan. Your selling your nonexistent soul to the apostle of unlimited statism Donald Trump is sad and unfortunate. Mostly for you Senator Paul. You could have chosen to be a man and stand up to the powers that be. Instead you decide to emasculate yourself so much you make Richard Simons look butch. Well if you ever grow or craft a pair. We would welcome you back to the cause of truth and human liberty. Till then take care and try to keep your pandering to Vladimir Putin to a minimum. You would look like human scum in Russian clothes.

Sincerely,

Indy Republican and the Gang AKA Human Scum

Rand Paul Betrays Liberty Republicans and Backs Trump

Senator Rand Paul RINO-Sellout KY

As much of a broken record as we are at this point. Truth compels is to once again admit that we are being put into a position that we never thought we would be in. Being that we find ourselves defending Senator-Elect Mitt Romney against our former ally Senator Rand “Traitor” Paul. We are referring to Senator Paul’s response to Senator Romney’s Washington Post Op-Ed  n which Romney said: "On balance, his (President Trump) conduct over the past two years, particularly his actions this month, is evidence that the president has not risen to the mantle of the office,".  We will delve into Mitt Romney’s Op-Ed in more detail in this and some other posts. For the moment we will keep discussing Senator Paul. We are goin on record here saying this is not a post that INDY REPUBLICAN writes lightly, nor are we in anyway permanently closing the door to the possibility our old friend Senator Paul can find his way back into our good graces. But we at IR are big believers in facing reality. And bottom line is since our Conservative/Libertarian principles are incompatible with supporting the Eastern Liberal Elitist President Donald Trump as the head of what to us should be the party of the individual, the party that promotes equality of opportunity, and the return to a coequal balance of power between the executive, legislative and judicial branches of our government. By extension Rand Paul’s equating of Donald Trump’s governance with Reagan/Goldwater Republicanism. Shows that the good Doctor Paul has way wandered off the reservation. Our readers may recall a previous post in which we praised Senator Paul for his criticism of President Trump for wanting to continue the war in Afghanistan. We are proud of that post and stand by each and every word. That being said as long as Rand Paul continues to defend Trump we are forced to hold his feet to the fire.

Now let’s get to the heart of what has all of us at IR steaming at Rand Paul. According to TheHill in an article written today by John Bowden:

Senator Rand Paul (R-KY) took aim at his incoming Senate colleague Mitt Romney on Wednesday after the Utah senator-elect targeted President Trump in an op-ed criticizing the president's character.

In a tweet, the Kentucky senator accused Romney of attempting to display "how virtuous he is in comparison to the President," while calling him a "big government Republican" opposed to former President Reagan's ideals of limited federal power.

Below are Senator Paul and President Trump’s Twitter responses to Senator-Elect Romney’s article:

Senator Mitt Romney (R?-UT)

As much as we have criticized Romney in the past and wished he would just fade into the sunset. As he was right to oppose Roy Moore when Moore ran for the US Senate in Alabama. Romney is absolutely correct in calling out Trump as being ill-suited to being president. He is also correct in pointing out that Trump is right to push for lower taxes, and to oppose burdensome regulations. That the President’s alienating of long standing American allies, his pandering to communists dictators such as Russian President Vladimir Putin and North Korea’s dictator Kim Jong-Un, and his advocacy of higher and higher tariffs have only served to make America respected less, not admired more. We still have a healthy amount of skepticism towards Romney and are not saying we would grant him sainthood. We will say that he would make a far superior president than Trump. A low bar to clear yes, but much better than any socialist democrat that’s for sure. It will be interesting to see what other reactions there will be to Romney’s Op-Ed. We are especially curious to see how his niece the shrewish RNC Chairwoman Ronna Romney-McDaniel will react to it. Something tells us we are glad we aren’t going to be going to the Romney house for the holidays!

Update: Guy Benson has his take over at Townhall on Mitt Romney’s opening salvo against Trump and also points out just how unpopular Trump is in Utah.

Senator Rand Paul nails it on Afghanistan

Senator Rand Paul R-Kentucky

Like the late great Gary Welsh and Paul Ogden we at IR oppose nation-building and most of us backed Senator Rand Paul for President last year. In fact most of us wrote in Rand Paul, Paul Ogden, or Ronald Reagan for President last year. Last night President Donald Trump issued a call to send more soldiers into Afghanistan in order to continue our decade long war. This is a reversal from then candidate Trumps promise to withdraw from Afghanistan he made while running for President. What concerns INDY REPUBLICAN greatly is the continued push by many in Washington to centralize more power into the executive branch and to further dilute Congresses responsibility as a separate and equal branch of government.

Fortunately there are some in congress who understand this. And foremost of them is Kentucky Senator Rand Paul. The Senator has written the following opinion piece which masterfully outlines the issues with President Trumps Afghanistan policy. Senator Paul also outlines the true conservative republican view of the separation of powers.

Here is Senator Paul's counterpoint to President Trumps Afghanistan speech tilted "Sixteen years on, it's past time to bring our troops home from Afghanistan":

The Trump administration is increasing the number of troops in Afghanistan and, by doing so, keeping us involved even longer in a 16-year-old war that has long since gone past its time.

The mission in Afghanistan has lost its purpose, and I think it is a terrible idea to send any more troops into that war. It's time to come home now.

Our war in Afghanistan began in a proper fashion. We were attacked on 9/11. The Taliban, who then controlled Afghanistan, were harboring al Qaeda, and after being warned, and after an authorization from Congress, our military executed a plan to strike back. Had I been in Congress then, I would have voted to authorize this military action.

But as is typical, there was significant mission creep in Afghanistan. We went from striking back against those who attacked us, to regime change, to nation-building, to policing their country for them. And we do it all now with an authorization that is flimsy at best, with the reason blurred, and the costs now known. We do it with an authorization that was debated and passed before some of our newest military personnel were out of diapers. This isn't fair to them, to the American people, or to a rational foreign policy.

The Afghanistan war going beyond its original mission has an enormous cost. First and most important is the cost to our troops. Deaths, injuries and unnecessary deployments causing harm to families are certainly the most important reason as to why you don't go to wars that aren't necessary.

Then comes the taxpayer. We have spent over $1 trillion in Afghanistan, and nearly $5 trillion on Middle East wars in the past 15 years. Would we not be better off with $5 trillion less in debt or using these funds in other, more productive ways?

Nation-building should not be our job, and it has consistently been a fool's errand for us, particularly in this region. There is no reason to believe we can do it in Afghanistan, and certainly no reason to believe we can do it without a permanent, costly presence in the country.

So I strongly disagree with the administration's actions here. I've spoken to the president, and I know he wants to end this war. We've all heard him say it. But talk won't get it done. Although I've been informed that the president rejected larger expansions of troops than the one announced this week, that's not good enough. He should have rejected this one and stuck to his principles. He knows this war is over, and he - unlike the last two presidents - should have the guts to end it for real, on his watch.

Regardless of the argument over the number of troops, I also will insist my colleagues take up a larger argument over the power to declare war. I believe we have allowed the executive to exercise far too much power in recent years.

This is one of the reasons I objected just before the recess when the Senate moved to consider the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA). I have an amendment that I will insist be considered that would repeal the 2001 AUMF on Afghanistan. That AUMF is outdated, overcome by events, and provides a feeble bit of cover for people who still want to be there.

If the president and my colleagues want to continue the war in Afghanistan, then at the very least Congress should vote on it. I'll insist they do this fall, and I'll be leading the charge for "no."

Paul is the junior senator from Kentucky.
