Rand Paul Betrays Liberty Republicans and Backs Trump

Senator Rand Paul RINO-Sellout KY

As much of a broken record as we are at this point. Truth compels is to once again admit that we are being put into a position that we never thought we would be in. Being that we find ourselves defending Senator-Elect Mitt Romney against our former ally Senator Rand “Traitor” Paul. We are referring to Senator Paul’s response to Senator Romney’s Washington Post Op-Ed  n which Romney said: "On balance, his (President Trump) conduct over the past two years, particularly his actions this month, is evidence that the president has not risen to the mantle of the office,".  We will delve into Mitt Romney’s Op-Ed in more detail in this and some other posts. For the moment we will keep discussing Senator Paul. We are goin on record here saying this is not a post that INDY REPUBLICAN writes lightly, nor are we in anyway permanently closing the door to the possibility our old friend Senator Paul can find his way back into our good graces. But we at IR are big believers in facing reality. And bottom line is since our Conservative/Libertarian principles are incompatible with supporting the Eastern Liberal Elitist President Donald Trump as the head of what to us should be the party of the individual, the party that promotes equality of opportunity, and the return to a coequal balance of power between the executive, legislative and judicial branches of our government. By extension Rand Paul’s equating of Donald Trump’s governance with Reagan/Goldwater Republicanism. Shows that the good Doctor Paul has way wandered off the reservation. Our readers may recall a previous post in which we praised Senator Paul for his criticism of President Trump for wanting to continue the war in Afghanistan. We are proud of that post and stand by each and every word. That being said as long as Rand Paul continues to defend Trump we are forced to hold his feet to the fire.

Now let’s get to the heart of what has all of us at IR steaming at Rand Paul. According to TheHill in an article written today by John Bowden:

Senator Rand Paul (R-KY) took aim at his incoming Senate colleague Mitt Romney on Wednesday after the Utah senator-elect targeted President Trump in an op-ed criticizing the president's character.

In a tweet, the Kentucky senator accused Romney of attempting to display "how virtuous he is in comparison to the President," while calling him a "big government Republican" opposed to former President Reagan's ideals of limited federal power.

Below are Senator Paul and President Trump’s Twitter responses to Senator-Elect Romney’s article:

Senator Mitt Romney (R?-UT)

As much as we have criticized Romney in the past and wished he would just fade into the sunset. As he was right to oppose Roy Moore when Moore ran for the US Senate in Alabama. Romney is absolutely correct in calling out Trump as being ill-suited to being president. He is also correct in pointing out that Trump is right to push for lower taxes, and to oppose burdensome regulations. That the President’s alienating of long standing American allies, his pandering to communists dictators such as Russian President Vladimir Putin and North Korea’s dictator Kim Jong-Un, and his advocacy of higher and higher tariffs have only served to make America respected less, not admired more. We still have a healthy amount of skepticism towards Romney and are not saying we would grant him sainthood. We will say that he would make a far superior president than Trump. A low bar to clear yes, but much better than any socialist democrat that’s for sure. It will be interesting to see what other reactions there will be to Romney’s Op-Ed. We are especially curious to see how his niece the shrewish RNC Chairwoman Ronna Romney-McDaniel will react to it. Something tells us we are glad we aren’t going to be going to the Romney house for the holidays!

Update: Guy Benson has his take over at Townhall on Mitt Romney’s opening salvo against Trump and also points out just how unpopular Trump is in Utah.

Senator Orrin Hatch to Retire after 40 years in Office w/Update

Senator Orrin Hatch R-Utah

Earlier today Utah Senator Orrin Hatch confirmed that he will not seek another term in the Senate. His retirement creates an opening for another republican to claim the seat. Back in September we blogged about rumors that former Massachusetts Governor and 2012 GOP Presidential nominee Mitt Romney was angling for Hatch's seat.

Governor Romney released this statement about Hatch's retirement:

I join the people of Utah in thanking my friend, Senator Orrin Hatch for his more than forty years of service to our great state and nation. As Chairman of the Senate Finance and Judiciary Committees and as the longest-serving Republican Senator in U.S. history, Senator Hatch has represented the interests of Utah with distinction and honor. Ann and I wish Senator Orrin Hatch and his loving wife Elaine all the best in their future endeavors.

4.3K

Hatch's decision to retire is considered by many to be a blow to President Donald Trump. Who is rumored to have been pressuring Hatch to not retire. Word is that Trump is afraid that if Hatch did as he has decide to retire this year. That Mitt Romney would win the GOP nomination and be elected to fill the seat. Romney is still very well liked by Utah voters possibly due to his Mormon faith. So well liked that his son Josh Romney may run this year for Utah Governor. Utah being such a strong republican state would most likely elect whatever candidate the GOP nominates to any statewide office. Another rumor is circulating that Evan McMullin the former chief policy director for the U.S. House Repulicans, CIA Agent, 2016 Independent Presidential Candidate, and founder of StandUpRepublic.com. Is also considering running in the GOP Senate Primary this year in Utah. McMullin won 21% of the vote in Utah in 2016 for President. So he obviously has some support in Utah. McMullin like Romney is also very open and active with his Mormon faith. If McMullin does enter and win the GOP Senate Primary. President Trump will no doubt have an even bigger headache with Evan McMullin in the Senate than he would if Mitt Romney gets elected. McMullin is so Anti-Trump he makes Romney look like Steve Bannon.

Evan McMullin

The filing deadline for the ballot in Utah is March 15th. Candidates then can choose to compete in their political parties state convention to see if they can garner enough support to make it to the primary ballot on June 26th, gather enough signatures to be placed on their parties primary ballot, or they can choose to both gather signatures and compete in their party convention to be placed on the ballot. So we will all just have to wait until March 15th to see who all is competing for the GOP Senate Nomination. If anyone out there has any information about Utah's upcoming senate race. We would love to hear from you.

UPDATE: CNN’s Chris Cillizza has an interesting analysis of President Trump’s inability to convince Orrin Hatch to stay in the Senate. Click here for Cillizza’s piece. Something else just occurred to us. If Mitt Romney does run for the Senate that could put his niece current RNC Chairwoman Ronna Romney-McDaniel in an awkward position. We chronicled last month about her decision to reverse course and back now defeated Alabama GOP Senate nominee Roy Moore. Governor Romney to his credit did oppose Moore’s candidacy. IR would love to know how McDaniel is going to deal with her Uncles probable Senate run.

Mitt Romney is Right about Roy Moore

For as flawed and ideologically inconsistent as former Massachusetts Governor and 2012 Republican Presidential nominee Mitt Romney is. He is absolutely right about how electing Roy Moore to the U.S. Senate would be the dumbest and most amoral move Republicans could make. Back in September we blogged about how we felt that Governor Romney should just fade into the sunset  IR stands by that post. However our principles and values demand that we give credit where credit is due. Brett Samuels of The Hill has the story:

Former GOP presidential nominee Mitt Romney said Monday a victory for Alabama Senate candidate Roy Moore would be “a stain on the GOP and on the nation,” hours after President Trump endorsed Moore.

"Roy Moore in the US Senate would be a stain on the GOP and on the nation. Leigh Corfman and other victims are courageous heroes. No vote, no majority is worth losing our honor, our integrity," Romney tweeted.

Romney, who is also a former governor of Massachusetts, had previously criticizedMoore, calling him unfit for office.
Romney's latest comments, however, came hours after President Trump endorsed Moore, despite multiple allegations of sexual misconduct against the candidate.
Fake Christian/Conservative Roy Moore

Governor Romney is right. Nothing is worth electing Roy Moore to the Senate. Fortunately Alabama voters have a wonderful candidate they can write in. Colonel Lee Busby is a man who Alabama and the nation would be blessed to have serving in the Senate. Unlike Roy Moore who is nothing but hot air and no action. Colonel Busby served for 31 years as a Marine Infantry Officer. He has fought to defend our freedoms overseas, he has raised four children, and has run his own business. Roy Moore talks, but Lee Busby actually delivers on his commitments.

Mitt Romney may run for the US Senate. Would someone tell Mitt to go the Hell away!

Mitt Romney

The rumor mill is abuzz with reports that former Massachusetts Governor and 2012 Republican Presidential Nominee Mitt Romney will run for Utah Senator Orrin Hatch's seat in Utah if Senator Hatch does not seek reelection next year.

Jack Crowe of The Daily Caller has the story:

Romney has yet to publicly commit to a Senate run, but he has reportedly decided to run in the event that Hatch steps down after his seventh term, two sources close to Romney told Utah Policy.

Hatch, 83, remains undecided about his future political career, but has said that he will run for his eighth term contingent on the continued good health of himself and his wife. Hatch likely won’t make a final decision on whether to run in 2018 until December, effectively preventing a field of challengers from assembling, according to Utah Policy.

While Hatch hasn’t made a final determination on the 2018 race, he indicated in March he would be willing to step aside if an “outstanding person” such as Romney were to run.

All of IR is praying to God that Governor Romney decides not to run for the Senate next year. After seeing him in the national spotlight for the better part of a decade. We are all more than ready to see him ride off into the sunset!
